License plate auction covers 34 provinces and cities

The Ministry of Public Security announced an auction of over 1.2 million license plates, with prefixes from 34 provinces and cities after the merger.

The Ministry of Public Security recently approved a plan to auction over 1.2 million vehicle license plates in its seventh auction. The starting price for car license plates is 40 million VND, and for motorbike license plates it's 5 million VND. The auction will last for 30 days from the date the license plate list is posted, estimated to be in the latter half of July.

The following license plate prefixes will be auctioned in the upcoming seventh round:

Thirty-four provinces and cities will participate in the auction, with 37 prefixes in total. Hanoi has two prefixes, 29 and 30; Ho Chi Minh City has three prefixes, 50, 51, and 59; and the remaining provinces and cities each have one prefix. Prefixes of some provinces and cities merged after 1/7/2025 do not appear in the auction list. For example, Vung Tau (72) and Binh Duong (61) are not included in the license plates to be auctioned for Ho Chi Minh City after the merger (50, 51, 59).

In this auction, over 301,000 car license plates will be auctioned, equivalent to about 24% of the total. Over 934,000 motorbike license plates will also be available. Ho Chi Minh City has the most license plates up for auction, followed by Hanoi. However, considering car license plates alone, Hanoi takes the lead, while Ho Chi Minh City leads in the number of motorbike license plates.

People can find information about, select license plates, and participate in the auction through the Ministry of Public Security's online portal, the Traffic Police Department's website, or the Vietnam Public Auction Company (VPA) website.

In the previous sixth auction (8/4-19/6), the Traffic Police Department reported the successful auction of 56,500 license plates, including about 19,500 car license plates and nearly 37,000 motorbike license plates, generating approximately 2.3 trillion VND for the state budget.

Since 15/9/2023, the total revenue from license plate auctions has reached 6.4 trillion VND. Some car license plates have been auctioned for very high prices, such as 30M-888.88 (10.5 billion VND) and 99A-888.88 (10 billion VND). Motorbike license plates have also reached billion-VND values, such as 50AA-888.88 (1.45 billion VND) and 11AA-111.11 (1.13 billion VND).
