Sales consultants at Mazda showrooms have stated that the remaining Mazda6 inventory sold out in April. Currently, dealerships are not accepting deposits for this model.
Truong Hai (Thaco), the assembler and distributor of the Mazda brand in Vietnam, has not yet responded to inquiries about the discontinuation.
Following the BT-50 pickup truck, the Mazda6 is the second Mazda model to be discontinued in Vietnam within the past year. The Mazda6 has also been discontinued in several key markets, including the US (2021) and Japan (2024).

In Japan, Mazda executives have indicated that the success of the D-segment sedan will be replaced by the CX SUV lineup in the future. This signifies a strategy of increasing the number of crossover (CUV) products to better meet global customer preferences, which are heavily leaning towards this type of vehicle.
The Mazda6 was one of the earliest entrants in the D-segment sedan market in Vietnam. In 1996, the Mazda 626 sedan, the predecessor to the Mazda6, was first distributed to Vietnamese customers through imports. This was during Mazda's initial entry into Vietnam, in a joint venture with the Hoa Binh Automobile Company (VMC).
Later, to unify the name for conciseness and memorability, Mazda renamed its vehicles with increasing numbers corresponding to size. The Mazda6 became Mazda's largest and most premium sedan.
In 2011, Mazda partnered with Thaco. In 2014, the domestically assembled Mazda6 was launched.
Mazda's D-segment sedan boasts a spacious interior, a durable engine, adequate amenities, and a more accessible price point than many of its Japanese competitors like Toyota and Honda, thanks to domestic assembly. However, over the years, the Mazda6's design has seen slow updates and has become somewhat outdated within its segment.
Mazda6 sales peaked in 2016 with over 3,200 units sold, and then gradually declined. Compared to the segment's best-selling model, the Toyota Camry, the Mazda6's competitiveness has been relatively weak.
From 2022 to the present, Mazda6 sales have plummeted. The lowest point was recorded in 2024 with 612 vehicles sold. By August 2025, the number has dropped to 56. This decline isn't unique to the Mazda6; the entire D-segment sedan market has experienced decreased sales due to the growing popularity of SUVs. However, this segment still retains a dedicated customer base who appreciate the traditional sedan design, driving experience, spaciousness, and various technologies and amenities.
With the discontinuation of the Mazda6, the D-segment sedan market in Vietnam now includes two Japanese models: the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. Several new Chinese contenders have emerged in the past year, such as the MG7 and BYD Seal. Representing South Korean automakers is the Kia K5, also assembled and distributed by Thaco.
