MG has become SAIC's export powerhouse, with 153,100 vehicles sold in Europe during the first half of 2025. However, MG's sales in China remain low, with 57,254 units delivered in the first seven months of the year, according to China EV DataTracker. This low demand is partly due to a lack of new energy vehicle offerings.
MG brand manager, Chen Cui, shared some insights, emphasizing that gasoline-powered MG vehicles are experiencing strong demand in China, especially the MG5 sedan, which targets young buyers and car enthusiasts. However, MG is not solely focused on gasoline vehicles and is actively exploring the new energy vehicle market.

According to 21st Century News, MG will launch 13 new energy vehicles (NEVs) globally within two years, emphasizing that the brand's entry into the NEV segment is not driven by low prices. The company will actively utilize its parent company SAIC's technology and supply chain. SAIC is currently involved in joint electric vehicle projects with Audi and Huawei (through the Shangjie brand).
The 13 upcoming NEV models include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). MG management shared that they will actively promote vehicle connectivity solutions with Oppo and semi-solid-state battery technology. The brand's ambition is to become a leading Chinese new energy vehicle brand globally. To demonstrate its commitment, MG plans to invest 10 billion CNY (1.4 billion USD) in developing new products and technologies.
The first MG product aligned with this new NEV-focused development strategy is the all-new MG4 electric hatchback. Pre-orders began in China on 5/8, with the official launch expected on 29/8. An MG4 version with a semi-solid-state battery will be available before the end of this year.
The hatchback measures 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height. It features a single rear-mounted electric motor producing 161 hp. The price of the MG4 with a conventional liquid battery ranges from 73,800 to 105,800 CNY (10,300 to 14,760 USD).
