A driver, traveling at high speed in the car lane next to the median strip separating cars and scooters on Nhat Tan bridge, had to react quickly. A scooter suddenly darted through a gap in the median, directly into the car's path. The driver immediately swerved left to avoid a collision. Fortunately, there were no vehicles in the adjacent lane, preventing a potentially serious accident.
Medians are designed to separate traffic flow, preventing scooters from entering car lanes and vice versa. The scooter rider's actions, as seen in the video, posed a significant risk to themselves and other road users.
When driving in the right lane, car drivers should reduce speed, stay towards the left side of their lane, and maintain a safe distance from the median to anticipate unexpected situations.
For medians on bridges, particularly sections with expansion joints where fixed barriers are impractical, authorities should implement alternative safety measures. These measures should prevent gaps that could lead to similar incidents or where accident victims from the scooter lane could be thrown into the car lane. Rubber or plastic markers, or flexible cords, could be suitable solutions in this situation.
