At an age when many choose to relax, Bui Cong Truong (born in 1960) and Pham Thi Bay (born in 1954) from Ho Chi Minh City continue to explore roads from the lowlands to the border on their motorcycle. Truong says that in over a decade, they've traveled more than 120,000 km, equivalent to three times around the Earth, showcasing their ageless passion and enduring friendship.

According to Truong, they have visited six countries, embarked on eight journeys in Southeast Asia and 12 across Vietnam, experiencing hundreds of destinations. “Initially, we just rode around provinces near Ho Chi Minh City for fun," Truong shares. "But the more we traveled, the more we felt our lives opening up. We got hooked.”
Each of their trips lasts from 20 to 45 days, traversing various terrains, from mountain passes and coastal roads to challenging dirt tracks in border regions. “I remember most vividly our trip earlier this year, starting on the 7th day of Tet, which lasted 45 days," Bay recounts. "We traveled from Ho Chi Minh City to Northwest Vietnam, finally completing our dream route of Ta Xua – Tram Tau – Nghia Lo. Every morning was freezing, and sometimes the fog was so thick that even with all the auxiliary lights on, we could barely see the road.”

Amidst these challenges, Bay says, were breathtaking sunrises over the mountains and a feeling of rejuvenation while immersed in nature. They meticulously prepare for every trip. Bay plans the route, checks the weather, packs light but ensures they have everything they need, including a first-aid kit. Truong maintains their motorcycle to guarantee safety throughout their journey.
“No one travels long distances on luck alone. An old motorcycle, if properly maintained, can still run smoothly and powerfully," Truong explains. "I've changed 20 pairs of tires and used over 100 liters of Motul 300V oil. A motorcycle is like a person; if you care for it, it will accompany you for a long time.” Along the way, they often meet new friends, such as a young couple on their first cross-country trip or a group of foreign travelers in Moc Chau.

Their journey resonates with young people not just because of the distance they've covered but also because they continue to travel despite their age or societal expectations. “If I can’t go on a few trips each year, I feel restless," Bay shares. Truong adds, "As long as we can still get the motorcycle out of the house, we’ll keep going.”
While they don't seek publicity, they share their journeys on travel forums as a way to document their adventures and quietly inspire others to pursue their passions.
