Carlsberg Vietnam expands Phu Bai brewery, reaffirming sustainability commitment

Carlsberg Vietnam's expanded Phu Bai brewery, the company's largest in Asia, utilizes environmentally friendly technology, according to CEO Andrew Khan.

Carlsberg Vietnam, in collaboration with the Hue People's Committee, inaugurated the expanded Phu Bai brewery on 26/8. The expansion represents an investment of over 2,000 billion VND (nearly 90 million USD). Andrew Khan, CEO of Carlsberg Vietnam, discussed the project and Carlsberg Group's global long-term growth strategy (Accelerate SAIL).

What does the expanded Phu Bai brewery mean for the company?

The Phu Bai brewery expansion signifies not only increased scale and capacity but also our long-term commitment to Vietnam. More importantly, it establishes a foundation for sustainable growth, strengthens our supply chain, enhances product quality, and delivers lasting value to consumers and the community.

With this expansion, Phu Bai is now Carlsberg's largest brewery in Asia and among the group's top performers. This achievement results from advanced technology, intelligent automation, and the dedication of Carlsberg Vietnam's team.

The expansion also demonstrates our unwavering commitment to quality. Domestic brands like Huda and Halida have received international recognition, including the Monde Selection gold medal in 2024.

We are ready to meet growing consumer demand with our diverse portfolio, from premium international brands like Carlsberg, 1664 Blanc, Tuborg, and Somersby to familiar local brands like Halida and, especially, Huda—a symbol of central Vietnam for over 35 years.

What are Carlsberg Vietnam’s next steps after this expansion?

The expansion provides a solid foundation, but how we utilize it is crucial. Carlsberg Vietnam's priorities are clear: operate at the highest standards, understand and support consumers, and pursue sustainable development with a focus on people and community engagement.

We will continue to meet business objectives while upholding our core values. This is how we build trust, maintain long-term relationships, and fulfill our mission of "brewing for a better today and a brighter future."

How does the Phu Bai expansion project embody Carlsberg Vietnam's environmental commitments?

Sustainable development is integrated into every aspect of the brewery's operations. Phu Bai brewery now operates primarily on internationally certified iREC renewable electricity, combined with a biomass steam system, eliminating carbon emissions during production.

We also utilize advanced water-saving technology and a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment system. In 2024, Carlsberg Vietnam achieved a water consumption rate of only 2.09 hl/hl (hectoliters of water per hectoliter of finished beer)—among the lowest in the Vietnamese beer industry and in Carlsberg's top 10 most water-efficient facilities in Asia.

Looking ahead, we have a clear roadmap. By 2025: achieve zero waste to landfill. By 2026: reduce water consumption to 2.0 hl/hl and ensure 100% reusable or recyclable packaging for all bottles, cans, and kegs. By 2028: achieve zero net emissions in production, aligning with Vietnam's goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

These milestones shape our operations and community contributions, guided by Carlsberg Group's Together Towards Zero and Beyond strategy, in which Vietnam plays a leading role.

What role did innovation play in the Phu Bai brewery expansion project?

Innovation was central to this project. Technologically, we implemented one of Vietnam's fastest packaging lines, applying real-time data analysis for optimal line performance, combined with advanced automation. The new brewing line saves 20% water and 15% energy—a smart, environmentally friendly, and future-proof solution.

However, innovation at Carlsberg Vietnam also involves a mindset shift. This innovative spirit has enabled our team to work more efficiently and safely. The advances in productivity and operational efficiency stem not only from technology and automation but also from the synergy between people and technology. This is the project's greatest significance.

How should innovation be implemented to promote both efficiency and human engagement?

We ensure this by involving our team from the outset and throughout the change process. From AI-integrated electric forklifts to redesigned factory workflows, every improvement is shaped by direct input from the factory personnel.

We also invest in training and development, from technical expertise and leadership skills to safety and health training. For successful innovation, each employee needs the tools, confidence, and belief to grow together.

How has the expansion project improved working conditions and safety at the Phu Bai brewery?

From the beginning, safety has been our top priority. Every decision is people-centric.

The Phu Bai brewery was redesigned to meet Carlsberg Group's global safety and health standards, with dedicated pedestrian zones, locally ventilated and cooled packaging areas, a modernized canteen, and an improved uniform management system.

The forklift system was converted to electric vehicles with integrated AI technology for real-time risk detection, enhancing safety in high-traffic areas. Notably, the project recorded over 1.4 million safe working hours during construction, demonstrating Carlsberg Vietnam's "Safety First" culture.

For us, safety is not just a checklist but a pervasive mindset. Every improvement starts with the question: "Is this safe and better for our team?" If so, we implement it; if not, we adjust until we achieve that.

How will Carlsberg Vietnam contribute to the local economy and community in the coming years?

On our journey of expansion and sustainable development, Carlsberg Vietnam is committed to contributing to the country's socio-economic progress.

Our vision is long-term partnership with Vietnam, measured by market share growth, business figures, and the shared values we create with the community. Carlsberg Vietnam is strengthening collaborations with domestic partners, sharing global expertise, and raising sustainability standards throughout the supply chain.

Socially, the "Clean Water for Beloved Central Vietnam" program has brought clean water to thousands of households over the past seven years, demonstrating our commitment to going beyond corporate social responsibility toward lasting impacts.

We aim for Carlsberg Vietnam to be recognized not only as an influential company but, more importantly, as a trusted partner of the government, our partners, and the community we serve.

What does this milestone mean to you personally as a leader?

We safely and sustainably executed a large-scale project with the Carlsberg Vietnam team at its heart. This reminds me that with clear goals and trust in people, we can achieve meaningful results.
