According to the Vietnam Coffee-Cocoa Association (VICOFA) and businesses in the industry, the recent surge in coffee prices stems from several factors: Supply has not met expectations, while demand from major markets typically increases in the final months of the year. Additionally, the US administration's 50% tariffs on goods from Brazil have stalled trade between the two countries, forcing many exporters to seek alternative sources.
Internationally, slow delivery from Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer, has fueled concerns about shortages. Brazilian farmers are nearing the end of their harvest but are holding onto their stock, anticipating higher prices. In Colombia, washed Arabica output in July reached 1.37 million 60-kg bags, up 19% year-on-year, the highest in a decade. German Bahamon, President of the National Federation of Coffee Growers, told Reuters that heavy rains earlier in the year had delayed the harvest to the second half of the year. Colombia's July exports reached 1.15 million bags, a 12.5% increase compared to July 2024.
In Vietnam, businesses exported 102,810 tons of coffee in July, earning 567.43 million USD, an increase of 36% in volume and 49.2% in value compared to the same period last year. The average export price of Robusta reached 4,736 USD per ton, and Arabica was 6,813 USD per ton, significantly higher than exchange-traded prices. In the first seven months of the year, exports reached nearly 1.1 million tons, worth over 6 billion USD, up 8% in volume and 66% in value year-on-year.
