On the morning of 24/8, Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) listed gold bars at 146-149 million VND per tael, marking a 1.4 million VND increase from the end of last week. Other major brands followed suit with similar price adjustments.
For plain gold rings, brands like SJC, PNJ, and DOJI listed buying prices from consumers at approximately 145.5-147.5 million VND per tael. Selling prices for these rings varied from 148.5 million to 151.5 million VND across different retailers.
On the international market, spot gold saw a nearly 50 USD increase during monday's trading, reaching 4,650 USD per ounce. When converted using Vietcombank's selling exchange rate (excluding taxes and fees), the global price stood at an equivalent of 147.5 million VND per tael.
This comparison reveals that SJC's gold bar buying price is 1.5 million VND lower than the global rate, with its selling price only 1.5 million VND higher per tael. The disparity for plain gold rings is even more pronounced: some brands are currently buying at 2 million VND below international prices and selling at 1-4 million VND above.
Domestic gold prices have consistently remained lower than global rates for the past three trading days, a notably rare market event.
Over the past five years, domestic gold prices have almost invariably exceeded converted global rates (prior to taxes and fees), averaging a difference of approximately 11.4 million VND per tael. This year, in March, this premium escalated to a record 30 million VND per tael.
VnExpress statistics indicate that since 2021, the domestic buying price has dipped below global rates in approximately 26 trading sessions. Notable periods include mid-7/2024, early 11/2024, and a continuous run of 18 sessions from 2/2025 to 3/2025.
This year, domestic gold prices also fell below global levels on 11/6 and have been observed doing so for three consecutive recent sessions, from 20/8-24/8.
