According to data from the Tax Department (Ministry of Finance), organizations and individuals conducting business on e-commerce platforms and online channels paid approximately 98 trillion VND in taxes during the first six months of the year. This represents a 58% increase compared to the same period last year.
In the first half of the year, 1,474 traditional businesses transitioned into corporate entities. In June alone, 910 businesses made this transition, accounting for nearly two-thirds of the total.
As of 30/6, approximately 47,078 businesses registered and used electronic invoices, exceeding the previous forecast by almost 30%.
The Tax Department also reported that in the first five months of the year, 137,000 households and individuals registered for taxes, filed, and paid taxes through the online portal. They paid nearly 1,800 billion VND in taxes, a year-on-year increase of over 55%. This increase in tax revenue is attributed to the tax authorities' intensified publicity and support for households and individuals in tax declaration and payment.
There are currently around 725,000 organizations and individuals conducting business on e-commerce platforms nationwide, with a total transaction value exceeding 75 trillion VND, according to data provided by 439 platforms to the tax authorities. Tax revenue from this sector has consistently increased over the past three years. Specifically, revenue in 2024 was approximately 116 trillion VND, a significant increase compared to the 83-97 trillion VND collected in the two preceding years.
From 1/7, e-commerce platforms and digital platforms are required to withhold and remit value-added tax (VAT) and personal income tax on behalf of sellers (households and individual businesses) on their platforms. These taxes will be deducted as soon as an order is successfully confirmed and payment is accepted by the buyer.
To manage and monitor online transactions, tax authorities require intermediary organizations, platform managers, and digital platforms to leverage data and technology. Platforms should facilitate simpler administrative procedures for households and individual businesses, making tax payment easier and preventing tax evasion. Additionally, the Tax Department has developed a handbook to guide households and individual businesses on tax declaration and payment for e-commerce activities.
