Located at Sokhna Port on the Gulf of Suez, Red Sea Container Terminals commenced operations with the docking of CMA CGM's vessel, CMA CGM Iron. The project operates under a 30-year concession agreement with the Egyptian Government, standing as a key milestone in upgrading national logistics capabilities.
This container port serves as a gateway connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe within the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Its infrastructure is designed to accommodate the largest container ships, enhancing international transport efficiency and improving trade capabilities for Egyptian import-export businesses.
Clemence Cheng, Chief Executive Officer of Hutchison Ports Europe, stated that the inauguration of Red Sea Container Terminals demonstrates the group's long-term commitment to Egypt – a market at the crossroads of global trade routes.
Meanwhile, Christine Cabau, Vice President of Assets at CMA CGM, noted that the new port at Sokhna is a successful joint venture between Hutchison Ports, CMA CGM, and Cosco Shipping. The port combines internationally standardized automation infrastructure with a North-South railway connection system, creating an efficient gateway for Egyptian goods to access global markets, thereby boosting productivity and competitiveness.
Zhu Tao, Chairman of Cosco Shipping Ports, emphasized that bringing Red Sea Container Terminals into operation strengthens Cosco's global port network, fostering a seamless trade corridor and enhancing links between Egypt, China, and international markets.
Egypt stands as a key container port hub in the Middle East - North Africa region, thanks to its strategic location guarding the Suez Canal, a vital maritime route connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa. The country's container port system primarily focuses on Alexandria, Port Said, Damietta, and the Ain Sokhna area on the Red Sea. In recent years, Egypt has boosted investment in deep-water ports and automation, attracting international operators such as: Hutchison Ports, CMA CGM, DP World, and Cosco Shipping. These container ports play a crucial role in trade, logistics, and the nation's ambition to become a regional transshipment center.
