Nearly 200 pigs destroyed in Phu Tho due to African swine fever

Authorities in Phu Tho province recently discovered and destroyed nearly 200 pigs that tested positive for African swine fever during an illegal transport.

A joint inspection team in Phu Tho province recently stopped a truck with license plate 37H-014.36 traveling from Son La to Hanoi. The truck carried 192 pigs weighing over 17 tons without quarantine papers or proof of origin.

Rapid tests revealed that 4 out of 5 random samples were positive for the African swine fever virus. Overnight, all the pigs were destroyed following strict procedures to prevent the spread of the disease and ensure food safety.

Authorities documented the incident and transferred the case to the relevant agency for administrative violation processing. A representative from the inspection team stated that illegal animal transportation poses significant risks, especially with the ongoing complexity of the disease, threatening supply and the consumer market towards the end of the year.

The Department of Animal Health (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) reported 386 African swine fever outbreaks in 15 northern provinces and cities since the beginning of the year. A total of 22,026 pigs were infected, died, or were destroyed, marking a 44% decrease in outbreaks and a 60% decrease in destroyed pigs compared to the same period last year.

However, 212 outbreaks, concentrated in 11 northern provinces and cities, are still within the 21-day monitoring period. These outbreaks account for approximately 55% of total outbreaks and 80% of pigs destroyed since the beginning of the year, with 17,438 pigs affected.

Given the complex situation, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged localities to implement drastic prevention and control measures since 4/6, aiming to eradicate the outbreaks. The Department of Animal Health also dispatched dozens of working groups to guide disease control efforts in affected areas.

Despite these efforts, new outbreaks continue to emerge in several northern provinces, indicating a potential widespread resurgence if not strictly controlled.
