According to the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC), electricity consumption across 27 northern provinces and cities (excluding Hanoi) reached 9.85 billion kWh in June, the highest among EVN's distribution companies.
On June 2, electricity consumption hit a record 373.6 million kWh. Peak demand reached 17,400 MW at 1:15 p.m. and 18,084 MW at 10 p.m.—a surge of 684 MW in less than 9 hours.
"These figures demonstrate the significant impact of the prolonged heatwave on people's electricity usage," an EVNNPC representative said.

When the temperature difference between indoors and outdoors is substantial, cooling devices operate at higher capacities to maintain effectiveness, leading to a spike in electricity consumption even if usage time remains constant. A slight change in the air conditioner's temperature setting can significantly impact electricity bills: setting it below 27 degrees Celsius can increase consumption by 1.5% to 2% for each degree lowered. Furthermore, neglecting regular maintenance or using old, inefficient appliances also contributes to higher energy consumption.
To manage electricity bills and promote efficient energy use during hot weather, EVNNPC recommends adjusting electricity consumption habits. Specifically: set air conditioners between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius; use the "Sleep" mode at night, combined with fans and closed doors to prevent heat loss; and limit the simultaneous use of high-power appliances during peak hours (1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily). Additionally, turn off appliances when not in use, utilize natural light during the day, and choose energy-efficient appliances. Regularly inspect, clean, and maintain electrical equipment (such as air conditioners and refrigerators) to ensure optimal performance.
Residents are also encouraged to monitor daily electricity usage through the EVNNPC Customer Care app or website. They can also use online bill calculators or set alert thresholds to adjust electricity consumption promptly.
In the long term, EVNNPC encourages eligible households and businesses to consider installing rooftop solar power systems for self-generation and consumption. "This is not only an effective solution to reduce electricity costs but also contributes to renewable energy development and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, as directed by the Government," the representative added.
