Walmart's fulfillment service, which stores and ships products for third-party sellers, now offers same-day delivery in major US cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta.
"Walmart's goal is to meet the speed customers expect," Manish Joneja, senior vice president of marketplace and fulfillment services for Walmart US, said in an interview. The service applies to some of the most popular products on the website, and Walmart plans to expand same-day delivery to more areas.
Walmart currently ranks first in the Transport Topics Top 100 largest private carriers in North America. Meanwhile, Amazon holds the top spot on the list of largest logistics carriers in North America, 15th in the private carrier rankings, and first in the Top 50 global freight companies.

As the world's largest retailer, Walmart is focusing on e-commerce as a key pillar in its growth strategy. As consumers increasingly pay more for faster shipping, the company prioritizes delivery speed. Walmart is also expanding its marketplace by attracting more sellers and expanding its product selection. Its fulfillment service, where sellers pay to use Walmart's warehousing and logistics system, is seen as key to improving profits.
Walmart has made progress in e-commerce but is still racing to catch up to Amazon, which has built a vast ecosystem around fast delivery and a network of third-party sellers. Meanwhile, Amazon is seeking to expand its market share in grocery retail, where Walmart still dominates.
The retail giant is also expanding its online business by leveraging its vast store network for deliveries. Its e-commerce operations are expected to be profitable in the US for the first time this year, aided by warehouse automation technology for more efficient shipping. The company's global e-commerce sales grew 25% last quarter.
In addition, Walmart will begin selling products from third-party sellers in some stores, starting with a pilot in Cypress, Texas. The company is also introducing new AI-powered tools to simplify selling on its marketplace platform.
