2,700 students miss school due to sudden flooding

Flash flooding overnight submerged Phuoc Tan 1 Secondary School, forcing 2,700 students to miss classes.

Around 2,700 students at Phuoc Tan 1 Secondary School in Phuoc Tan ward (formerly Bien Hoa City) were unable to attend classes on 13/9 due to unexpected flooding.

School officials reported that the Buong River, which flows through Phuoc Tan ward, rose rapidly yesterday afternoon, inundating several residential areas. The schoolyard and some ground-floor classrooms were submerged under 0.3 to 0.6 meters of water.

Although the floodwaters began to recede this morning as the weather cleared, the school remained closed. Teachers were on site to clean up and pump out the remaining water. To ensure student safety, classes are scheduled to resume next Monday, 15/9.

Heavy rainfall over the past two days caused the Buong River to overflow, impacting hundreds of households in Binh An and An Vien communes, as well as Phuoc Tan ward.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training's academic calendar, local authorities and schools have the autonomy to cancel classes due to natural disasters like flooding, provided they arrange make-up lessons.
