Ministry of education denies university merger rumors

Rumors circulating about the merger of Hanoi university of science and technology, Hanoi university of industry, and other universities are false, according to the Ministry of Education and Training.

The Ministry of Education and Training announced on 25/9 that misinformation is circulating regarding the reorganization of the higher education system, including university clusters in the north.

The rumors suggested that Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Hanoi University of Industry, Electric Power University, University of Transport Technology, and University of Mining and Geology would merge to form the National University of Technology and Engineering. Another rumor proposed the creation of the National University of Economics and Law by combining the National Economics University, Foreign Trade University, Hanoi Law University, and the Academy of Finance.

The Ministry urged the public to be cautious and refrain from spreading this false information.

"The Ministry of Education and Training has been tasked by the government to develop a plan for reorganizing the higher education system. We are working with relevant agencies to research and assess the current situation before submitting a proposal to the government for consideration and decision", the Ministry stated.

Resolution 71 of the Politburo calls for urgent restructuring of universities, including mergers and closures of substandard institutions, elimination of intermediary levels, exploration of merging research institutes with universities, and transferring management of some universities to local authorities.

Minister Nguyen Kim Son stated on 18/9 that approximately 140 public universities will be reorganized, excluding those under the management of the police, military, and private institutions.

The Ministry is currently considering several options, such as transferring universities under central government or ministry management to local authorities, merging local and central universities, and merging universities within the same ministry. Some universities may be dissolved if they are too small or fail to meet standards. According to the Minister, the reorganization aims to address fragmentation and promote development.

Additionally, the Ministry is considering restructuring plans to streamline operations and strengthen universities. The Ministry will develop tailored plans for each university, including personnel appointments, to ensure the best possible outcomes.
