Cash rewards for students achieving IELTS 7.0

Students at Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education (HCMUTE) will receive 2.5 million VND for achieving an IELTS score of 7.0-7.5 or higher.

According to a university announcement last week, the 7.5 IELTS score requirement applies to English language education students, while other students need a 7.0. Each student can receive the reward only once during their studies at the university.

The university also recognizes equivalent scores from other English proficiency tests:

IELTS TOEIC (Listening & Reading) TOEIC (Speaking) TOEIC (Writing) TOEFL ITP TOEFL iBT CEFR VSTEP / PEIC
7.0 850 180 180 590 94 C1 C1
7.5 945 200 200 649 109 C1 C1

The university also provides an IELTS equivalency chart for other foreign language certificates:

IELTS Russian French Chinese Japanese German
7.0 - 7.5 TRKI 3 DALF C1 HSK Level 5 JLPT N2
C1 Test DaF level 5

Dr. Tran Thanh Thuong, Head of Admissions and Student Affairs, stated that this policy aims to motivate students to improve their English proficiency. It also helps ensure they meet the university's graduation requirements, preparing them for the job market and international integration.

He noted that the reward threshold exceeds the university's standard graduation requirements. Currently, HCMUTE requires students to achieve a minimum IELTS score of 5.5-6.0. English language education students are required to achieve a 7.0.

Many universities now use international language certificates, particularly IELTS, for admissions. Universities may award bonus points (up to 3) or use the certificates for combined admission assessments with high school graduation exam scores, academic transcripts, or competency assessments. Some universities use both methods. The common requirement is an IELTS score of 5.0-6.0 or equivalent. This year, the number of applicants using international language certificates for admission has increased by 150-400% at many universities.

After enrollment, students with these certificates often have their English proficiency requirements waived or receive exemptions from certain English language courses. HCMUTE is currently the only university offering cash rewards for achieving specific IELTS scores.
