Times Higher Education (THE) announced its 2025 world university rankings by subject group on 21/1. Vietnamese universities are ranked in 9 out of 11 groups, including the new subject of arts and humanities, with National University Ho Chi Minh City as the sole representative in the 601-800 band.
The other subjects include business and economics, computer science, education, engineering, life sciences, clinical and health, physical sciences, and social sciences.
Among these, engineering continues to feature many ranked universities, with 9 out of 11 institutions listed. Duy Tan University and Ton Duc Thang University achieved the highest ranking in this field, placing in the 301-400 band.
These two universities also lead in other subjects. Duy Tan University's physical sciences program moved into the 251-300 band, an improvement from its 301-400 position last year. This marks the highest ranking for Vietnam in THE's subject-specific lists.
In its debut appearance, University of Da Nang is ranked in six subject groups, with its best performance in business, economics, and social sciences, placing in the 801-1000 band. Nguyen Tat Thanh University is listed in three groups, achieving its highest rank of 501-600 in clinical and health.
When considering individual institutions, National University Ho Chi Minh City is the only university to be ranked across all nine subject groups.

THE's subject rankings evaluate 830 universities from 88 countries and territories, utilizing 18 indicators consistent with its overall world rankings.
These indicators are categorized into five main criteria: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry (knowledge transfer), and international outlook.
Overall, American universities dominate the top positions. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) leads in arts and humanities, business and economics, and social sciences, mirroring its performance from last year. Stanford University holds the top spot for education and law, Harvard University for engineering and life sciences, and California Institute of Technology for physical sciences.
Universities from the United Kingdom lead the remaining three subject groups. Oxford University ranks first in computer science and clinical and health, while Cambridge University is best in psychology.
THE is one of the world's three largest university ranking organizations, alongside QS and Shanghai Ranking.
