8 universities of Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City discontinue separate high school graduation exam score consideration

Combining high school graduation exam scores, academic transcripts, and competency assessment will be the primary admission method for Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, replacing the previous years' individual score evaluations.

On the afternoon of 1/3, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) announced its system-wide admission methods.

The combined admission score calculation for 2026 across its eight member universities is as follows:

Combined Admission Score = w₁ × high school graduation exam score + w₂ × competency assessment score + w₃ × academic transcript score + bonus points (if any).

Here, w₁, w₂, and w₃ are coefficients for each component score. The admission score scale is converted to 100.

Member universities can independently determine their minimum score thresholds and the coefficients w₁, w₂, w₃ to align with specific training programs, ensuring fair and convenient conditions for candidates.

According to the admissions council, the coefficients w₁, w₂, and w₃ depend on the enrollment rates for different methods or the academic performance of admitted students in previous years.

For the combined admission method, candidates must submit high school graduation exam scores and academic transcripts, as announced by VNUHCM late last year. The competency assessment score, however, may be converted from other score types, depending on the specific member university.

Bonus points, if applicable, will be awarded according to the general regulations of VNUHCM and the Ministry of Education and Training, but will not exceed 10/100 points.

Candidates from 149 high schools prioritized for admission to VNUHCM may receive a maximum of 5 bonus points if they meet two requirements: they studied for at least two years at the high school, and their average academic performance for all three years was rated "good" or higher. This policy will remain in effect until 2028. From 2029, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City will only award bonus points to students from specialized high schools.

Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City comprises eight member universities with over 100,450 full-time students: Bach khoa, Khoa hoc Tu nhien, Khoa hoc Xa hoi va Nhan van, Kinh te - Luat, Cong nghe Thong tin, Quoc te, Khoa hoc Suc khoe, and An Giang.

In 2025, the university admitted over 25,700 students. Nearly 14,500 of these students were admitted through the competency assessment method (V-ACT exam). The remaining admissions were via direct admission, priority admission, and high school graduation exam scores.
