For the 2026 exam, HNUE is expanding its subject offerings, incorporating informatics, technology, and economic and legal education for the first time. These are included alongside the usual subjects: mathematics, literature, English, physics, chemistry, biology, history, and geography. Candidates can register for a minimum of three and a maximum of 7 subjects.

The assessment employs a comprehensive format designed to evaluate both core knowledge and critical thinking skills. Exam questions combine multiple-choice and essay formats, assessing core knowledge comprehension, as well as reasoning, analytical, evaluative, problem-solving, and creative abilities. Candidates take the exam directly in the testing room.

The university has maintained the exam fee at 250.000 VND per subject. Anticipated exam locations include Hanoi, Son La, Cao Bang, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Da Nang, and Gia Lai.

The previous year's competency assessment exam by Hanoi National University of Education attracted nearly 17.500 candidates, with an average of three subjects per candidate. The results were used by 25 universities for admissions, mostly from the pedagogy sector. Some universities from other sectors included Hanoi University of Civil Engineering and Thai Binh University of Medicine and Pharmacy.
