Hanoi University of Science and Technology sees surge in applicants with perfect international test scores

The number of applicants using international qualifications for Hanoi University of Science and Technology's (HUST) talent-based admissions program has nearly doubled compared to last year, with many achieving perfect SAT, A-Level, and AP scores, along with IELTS scores of 7.5-8.5.

Associate Professor Vu Duy Hai, Head of the Admissions and Career Guidance Board at HUST, revealed this information on the sidelines of the "Welcome to Idol Talent Admissions 2025" program on 22/6.

Hai reported that HUST received approximately 5,000 applications for its talent-based admissions program this year. 400 applicants hold national or international awards (eligible for direct admission as per the Ministry of Education and Training's regulations). 1,600 applicants are being considered based on international qualifications such as the SAT, ACT, A-Level, AP, or IB. Around 3,000 applicants have applied for assessment based on their academic records and interviews.

According to Hai, the number of applicants with national and international awards, as well as international test scores, has almost doubled compared to last year.

Many applicants achieved high scores on international tests, such as a perfect 1600/1600 on the SAT combined with an IELTS score of 8.0, or a 15/15 on the AP with an IELTS score of 8.5. Some students achieved a 30/30 on the A-Level with an IELTS score of 7.5.

"The sharp increase in applicants using international qualifications is due to the growing number of students taking these tests," Hai explained. "Recent restrictions on international students by countries like the US might also be a factor contributing to the higher number of applications to HUST."

Here is a list of some high-achieving students who have applied to HUST's talent-based admissions program:

For applicants using international qualifications, the admission score is the total score of the submitted qualifications. The conversion to a 100-point scale is as follows:

As per Ministry of Education and Training regulations, HUST will standardize admission scores across all admission methods. Talent-based admission scores (on a 100-point scale) will be converted to the same scale as the Thinking Assessment Test and high school graduation exam scores for ranking and selection.

HUST plans to admit 9,680 students this year through three methods: talent-based admissions, Thinking Assessment Test scores, and high school graduation exam scores.

Today, the university is hosting a meeting for talent-based admission applicants and conducting interviews for those being assessed based on their academic records and interviews.

Hai stated that the interview does not assess knowledge but rather presentation skills, career understanding, and social awareness. This year, the interview serves as a qualifying factor. A score of 10/20 is considered a pass and is not factored into the overall admission score along with academic performance and achievements as in previous years.
