Ho Chi Minh City expected to send most students to national excellent student exam

Ho Chi Minh City can send a maximum of 40 students per subject to the national excellent student exam, Hanoi 20, and some provinces a maximum of 10, according to a proposal by the Ministry of Education and Training.

The Ministry of Education and Training published the draft amendment to the national excellent student selection examination regulations on 27/8. The new regulations on the number of contestants aim to accommodate newly established provinces and cities after the administrative reorganization.

Localities that remain unchanged after the reorganization or units from universities can send a maximum of 10 students per subject, except for Hanoi, which can send 20. Merged provinces and cities can send 20 to 30 students per subject, depending on the location. Ho Chi Minh City is allowed to send 40 students.

"This regulation aims to avoid disruption and ensure the rights of the candidates," the Ministry of Education and Training stated.

The following table shows the maximum number of students allowed for each subject in the national excellent student selection exam by province and city:

In the 2024-2025 school year, nearly 6,500 students from 68 units (63 provinces and cities, and 5 universities) participated nationwide, an increase of over 660 compared to the previous school year. Thirteen subjects were tested: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, literature, history, geography, English, Japanese, French, Russian, and Chinese.

Over 3,800 students, nearly 59% of the total participants, won prizes. Among the 63 provinces and cities, Hanoi led with 200 prize winners, followed by Ho Chi Minh City with 166, and Hai Phong with 102.

Prize-winning students receive certificates and are eligible for direct admission or priority admission to many universities. In addition, they receive awards from their localities based on individual policies, amounting to tens of millions of dong.

For subjects in international Olympic competitions, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, and biology, the Ministry of Education and Training will convene a number of high-scoring students to select the national team.
