The Ministry of Education and Training announced on 3/7 that it is investigating after social media widely reported unusual math scores from Tuyen Quang High School for the Gifted in the recent high school graduation exam. A delegation from the ministry arrived in Tuyen Quang yesterday to commence work.
Reports detailed that 299 out of 328 students at Tuyen Quang High School for the Gifted achieved scores of 9 or 10 in math, with 147 students securing a perfect 10. The school's average math score reached 9,58. This group also demonstrated high averages in other subjects, including Physics at 8,3, Chemistry at 8,9, Biology at 8,7, and History at 9,3.
A 9,58 average math score would rank as the highest nationwide among specialized high schools, significantly surpassing top institutions. For instance, Hanoi University of Education High School for the Gifted achieved an average of 8,3; the High School for Gifted Students, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, recorded 8,51; while Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted in Nghe An and Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted in Ninh Binh had average math scores of 8,22 and 8,45, respectively. Notably, Tuyen Quang province's overall average score for the 2026 high school graduation exam was 5,7, placing it 18th out of 34 provinces and cities.
The ministry emphasized that the inspection and review are being conducted urgently, objectively, seriously, and comprehensively to ensure a true assessment of the situation. It added that any violations discovered will be handled strictly according to regulations and authorities as per the examination's organizational structure. The ministry confirmed that the inspection and review results will be announced publicly.
A leader from the Tuyen Quang Department of Education and Training asserted that the grading process "definitely had no issues." Tuyen Quang High School for the Gifted, established in 1989, enrolls approximately 400-500 students each year. The 2026 high school graduation exam, held on 11-12/6, saw a record 1,2 million candidates.
