Nearly half of new Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics students achieve IELTS 5.5 or higher

More than 4,300 new students at Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (UEH) possess foreign language certificates at IELTS 5,5 or higher, accounting for 48% of the total admitted cohort.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (UEH) first announced this data last weekend; however, it did not specify the number of students within each score band.

Currently, the university's foreign language output standard ranges from IELTS 5,0 to 6,5, depending on the training program. This means many students already meet these requirements upon admission. The university recognizes that a strong foreign language foundation helps students better access academic materials, scientific research, and English-taught programs.

This year, UEH admitted over 8,900 new students across 64 majors using a comprehensive admission method that considers multiple score components. Notably, 63 out of 64 top entrants achieved perfect admission scores (100/100), with each receiving a scholarship worth 47 million dong. Additionally, nearly 1,400 admitted students came from specialized or gifted high schools, and over 900 were recognized as provincial or city-level excellent students.

According to regulations from the Ministry of Education and Training, foreign language output standards are determined by the Vietnam National Qualifications Framework. Under these guidelines, university graduates are required to achieve level 3/6 (B1) or higher.

Last year, two other prominent economics universities, National Economics University (NEU) and Foreign Trade University (FTU), reported that approximately 80-85% of their students met the foreign language output standards immediately upon enrollment.
