Students in 91 majors to receive 3.7-8.4 million VND monthly scholarships

The Ministry of Education and Training has updated the list of 91 basic science, engineering, and technology majors eligible for monthly support ranging from 3.7 to 8.4 million VND, following a rearrangement and renaming process.

The Ministry of Education and Training announced on 21/9 the updated list of key basic science, engineering, and strategic technology majors for which students are eligible for scholarships under Government Decree 179.

This updated list features 20 fewer majors than the previous version from June. The adjustment follows the Ministry's announcement of a new higher education training catalog, which involved the rearrangement and renaming of numerous fields.

Under Decree 179, eligible students will receive monthly support. Bachelor's students can get 3.7-5.5 million VND for up to 4 years, while engineering students receive support for up to 5 years. Master's and doctoral students are eligible for 5.5-8.4 million VND per month, with support extended for the entire standard duration of their programs.

In late August, the Ministry reported that out of more than 633,000 candidates who confirmed their admission this year, approximately 212,600 chose STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).

Of these, over 121,000 candidates enrolled in 15 groups of key basic science, engineering, and strategic technology majors, making them eligible for scholarships under Decree 179. Many experts view this as a strong incentive for students and parents to choose these fields.

The Government's Higher Education Development Strategy for phase 2026-2035, with a vision to 2045, announced on 21/9, sets a target for STEM students to account for 40% of all higher education enrollment.
