Over 147,000 students skip university enrollment despite acceptance

While approximately 773,200 students were accepted into universities, only nearly 625,500 confirmed their enrollment through the Ministry of Education and Training's system.

This information was revealed in the Ministry's draft report at the higher education conference on the morning of 17/9. This means almost 147,700 accepted students, over 19%, declined to enroll in the first round, similar to last year.

According to regulations, these students will have their acceptance rescinded without a valid reason. This trend has continued in previous years, with many students choosing to study abroad or declining offers from less-preferred programs to apply in later rounds.

This year, universities used 17 admission methods. All methods were used concurrently after students received their high school graduation exam scores, unlike previous years, where some methods were used earlier. Ministry statistics show that over 39% of students applied based on high school graduation exam scores, while over 42% used their academic transcripts.

Approximately 852,000 students applied to over 500 universities and colleges, submitting a total of 7.6 million applications. About 30% of applicants listed 10 or more desired programs.

For universities, all admission scores were converted to a 30-point scale, ranging from 13 to 30. The average admission score was 19.11, a decrease of 3 points compared to last year’s intake, which the Ministry suggests indicates a significant differentiation in scores.

Six programs had a perfect admission score of 30: English language education and Chinese language education, both at Hue University and the University of Languages and International Studies, Vietnam National University, Hanoi; international relations at the Military Science Academy; and medicine at the Military Medical Academy.

Immediately following the first round of admissions, dozens of schools announced supplemental admissions. The Ministry allows universities to conduct supplemental admissions until December.
