Sai Gon University reinstates competency assessment test for admissions

Sai Gon University (SGU) has reinstated the competency assessment test for five majors, just two days after removing it.

Applicants for five majors – applied mathematics, data science, history, geography, and information-library science – can now use their competency assessment test scores from Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), according to an announcement on the afternoon of 28/7.

The university explained that VNU-HCM had provided a percentile conversion table comparing competency assessment test scores with the 2025 high school graduation exam scores for two combinations: A00 (math, physics, chemistry) and C00 (literature, history, geography). This allows SGU to convert scores between the two methods for the five majors.

SGU's score conversion formula

Two days prior, SGU had announced it would not accept competency assessment test scores for these five majors. This was because VNU-HCM had only released score comparisons for four combinations: A01 (math, physics, English), B00 (math, chemistry, biology), C01 (math, literature, physics), and D01 (math, literature, English). The five majors in question use A00 and C00 combinations.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training's university admissions schedule, the deadline for students to register and adjust their applications is 5 PM today. Applicants can pay their application fees online from 29/7 to 5 PM on 5/8.

University admission scores will be announced before 5 PM on 22/8.

This year, SGU is admitting 5,220 students through four methods: direct admission as regulated by the Ministry of Education and Training; high school graduation exam scores; VNU-HCM's competency assessment test scores; and V-SAT scores. The competency assessment test scores are not applicable to pedagogy majors.

The minimum scores for the various admission methods, after conversion, range from 17 to 25, mostly increasing by 0.5 to 6 points compared to last year. The history and geography pedagogy majors have the highest minimum score at 25, a 6-point increase.

SGU's minimum scores for 2025

Tuition fees for the 2025 intake at SGU are expected to be between 78 and 193 million VND for the entire program (4-4.5 years).

Last year, SGU's admission scores ranged from 21.17 to 28.25 based on high school graduation exam results, with the history pedagogy major having the highest score.
