Student loses spot at specialized high school after 10 days

After 10 days of attending Tran Phu Specialized High School as a supplementary admission, Pham Huy Hung and his family were stunned to learn he'd lost his place.

Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, mother of Hung (born in 2010), from Hai An district, reported on 18/7 that her son had applied to Tran Phu Specialized High School during the 10th-grade entrance exam in June but didn't initially qualify. After the school lowered the admission threshold, Hung was accepted into the Russian language program and completed enrollment.

However, on 17/7/2025, the family received shocking news: the school informed them that due to a "mistake" identified by the Hai Phong Department of Education and Training, Hung's admission was invalid. The family was asked to "immediately withdraw his application."

In a document issued the previous day, the Hai Phong Department of Education and Training explained that the second round of admission scores for the Russian language program at Tran Phu Specialized High School was 34.95 points, with a total of 35 students meeting the criteria. However, upon review, the admissions board discovered they had overlooked a student with a score of 35.05 due to an "unintentional technical error".

To ensure this student's rightful place, the Department adjusted the admission score for the Russian language program to 35.05. Consequently, Hung, with his score of 34.95, no longer qualified.

Hung had previously been accepted to Le Quy Don High School. The Department requested that this school re-enroll him before 18/7 and offered their "sincere apologies" to Hung's family.

"This is a very unfortunate situation that could impact the family's emotional well-being and plans. We sincerely hope both families understand and sympathize", the Hai Phong Department of Education and Training stated.

Huong stated her disagreement with the decision.

"Suddenly losing the opportunity to study at his dream school after officially enrolling because of an adult's mistake is a devastating blow to a child and an irreparable loss," she said.
