Top math students opt for psychology, journalism, communications

More than 53% of students admitted to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities with math-inclusive subject combinations scored above 8 in math, primarily choosing psychology, journalism, and multimedia communications.

The University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH), Vietnam National University, Hanoi, on 12/8, hailed this as an encouraging result, despite a drop in benchmark scores, which generally ranged from 21 to 25,5 out of 30.

The decrease in benchmark scores primarily resulted from the distribution of Literature scores and the university's decision to discontinue the C00 combination (Literature, History, Geography) for 14 majors.

Among the 2.650 admitted students, 25% ranked within the top 5% of the highest scores nationwide in the high school graduation exam; 62% achieved 24 points or higher. Many candidates particularly excelled in admission combinations that included math and foreign languages.

Specifically, over 53% of the 810 students admitted through math-inclusive combinations achieved excellent scores (8 or higher) in math, marking an increase from previous years. This group gravitated towards popular majors such as psychology, multimedia communications, public relations, and journalism. Some students even attained a perfect 10 in math.

Nguyen Ha Linh, the top scorer, achieved 28 points in the D09 combination (math, history, English) with 9 points in math, choosing psychology. Another student, Duong Ngo Minh Duc, declined a direct admission offer for literature to secure a spot with 30,25 out of 30 points in the C00 combination. Duc scored 9 in both math and literature, 9,25 in history, and also benefited from an IELTS score of 8,0 and a national third prize in literature.

Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son, Vice Rector, noted that these results are promising. They indicate that new students possess not only language aptitude and social awareness but also a strong foundation in logical thinking and quantitative abilities.

This trend reflects a positive shift in how society and students perceive social sciences and humanities. The university's programs, especially those in applied social sciences, communication, and management, are increasingly attracting bright students with comprehensive thinking skills.

"Improving the quality of input in both logical thinking (math) and foreign languages aligns with Vietnam National University, Hanoi’s strategy to restructure admission combinations and its orientation towards elite training", said Mr. Son. "This is a key foundation for the university to innovate teaching methods, boost scientific research, and progressively achieve its program internationalization goals."

This year, USSH admitted students through three methods: direct admission, scores from Vietnam National University, Hanoi’s competency assessment exam, and high school graduation exam scores. Tuition fees for new students range from 19,1 to 35 million dong per year.
