University educators discuss work-integrated learning

Over 90 educators and administrators from 24 universities discussed work-integrated learning models to better align education with industry needs.

This activity was part of the Higher Education Practice Community program organized by RMIT University in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Associate Professor Seng Kiat Kok, RMIT Vietnam's Director of Student Life, affirmed that work-integrated learning (WIL) is an effective way to connect students with businesses, equipping them with the necessary skills, confidence, and networks upon graduation.

The model focuses on creating active, authentic, and highly applicable learning experiences. Through projects simulating real-world scenarios, internships, and field trips, WIL allows students to apply academic knowledge in the practical contexts of businesses, organizations, and communities.

In a series of workshops from May to August, university representatives discussed key aspects of WIL, such as effective models for integrating WIL into curricula and ensuring quality standards for learning outcomes.

Participants also explored authentic assessment methods, frameworks that support employability, career pathways, and student success after graduation. RMIT and other universities also presented innovative projects, fostering a forum for knowledge and experience exchange.

"By focusing on enhancing education quality, technological innovation, and meeting industry demands, this year's program directly supports Vietnam's strategic priorities in educational development and preparing the workforce for the future," Associate Professor Kok emphasized.

According to Dr. Ly Thien Trang, Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH) and a member of the Community's advisory board, the program helped educators and administrators grasp new educational trends and expand their networks with colleagues nationwide. The focus on work-integrated learning this year aligns perfectly with HUTECH's curriculum innovation direction.

2025 marks the 25th anniversary of RMIT Vietnam and the 5th anniversary of the Higher Education Practice Community initiative. During this period, the initiative has grown into a cohesive network, bringing together numerous educators and administrators to promote digital transformation, innovation, and strong university-industry collaboration in Vietnam.

Professor Sherman Young, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President of RMIT University, shared that positive impacts and practical initiatives have emerged from the collaboration within the Practice Community.

"We look forward to continuing the strong partnership between RMIT and Vietnamese educational institutions for many years to come," he added.

For many educators, the program offers opportunities for academic exchange and professional development inspiration. Phan Hong Giang, a visiting lecturer at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, shared that each year, she gains new ideas and tools applicable to her teaching. The community provides a valuable space for growth, learning, and connection with colleagues.

The Higher Education Practice Community initiative contributes to RMIT's "Knowledge with Action" strategy and national objectives, which prioritize education, innovation, and workforce development in long-term development strategies.

In the next phase, the community will continue to focus on innovation, expanding collaboration, and increasing social impact. Planned programs will further explore emerging technologies, strengthen industry connections, and support Vietnam's vision for educational reform.

"Strengthening education quality will directly impact the economy. RMIT Vietnam is committed to building an increasingly sustainable Practice Community, sharing international expertise, and promoting technological innovation within the Vietnamese higher education system," Associate Professor Kok affirmed.
