This announcement comes ahead of the International Education Conference and Exhibition on 8/10, organized by Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training. This visit also marks the first time a UK Minister of State for Education has traveled to Vietnam.
Minister Smith stated that a key driver for her visit is to expand educational partnerships and foster mutual growth. The UK increasingly focuses on high-quality technical and vocational education, alongside traditional academic education. As technology transforms economies and jobs, both the UK and Vietnam recognize the importance of equipping the younger generation with practical skills.
She also noted Vietnam is implementing an ambitious economic and education reform program, aiming to make English a second language in schools by 2035. Priority areas for Vietnam, such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital technology, advanced manufacturing, green industry, and professional services, also align with the UK's strengths.
"This opens up significant opportunities for both countries to cooperate," Minister Smith said.
This relationship will reach a new milestone with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on education and training cooperation at the conference on 8/10. Professor Sir Steve Smith, the UK's International Education Envoy, along with over 20 leading UK education and technology organizations, will attend the event.
Currently, the UK stands as Vietnam's largest international partner in education and training, boasting over 70 transnational programs and numerous long-standing collaborations in general education, vocational education, English language teaching, and professional training. Notable examples include the British Council's Skills for Employability program, British University Vietnam (BUV), and Chevening Scholarships.
"Cooperation between the United Kingdom and Vietnam can contribute to creating more opportunities for learners, employers, and communities in both countries," Minister Smith observed.
