On the afternoon of 4/10, the People's Committee of Hanoi City organized the closing and award ceremony for the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA). As the host nation, Vietnam sent hai teams to participate: Vietnam 1 (the official team) and Vietnam 2, comprising 10 students.
Sau students won gold medals: Nguyen Tuan Kiet (Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted, Hanoi), Le Gia Hong Minh (Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted), Le Ba Tuan Viet (High School for Gifted Students, Vietnam National University, Hanoi), Le Quang Tri (High School for the Gifted, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City), Nguyen Quang Dung, and Mai Van Khanh (Lam Son High School for the Gifted, Thanh Hoa).
Silver medals were awarded to Tran Minh Thai, Bui Nguyen Hong Quan, Nguyen Truong Chinh (Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted), and Dinh Quang Dung (Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, Phu Tho).
The IOAA 2026 took place from 25/9 to 5/10, featuring 320 contestants from 66 countries and territories. This large-scale international science competition demands high expertise in astronomy and astrophysics from high school students.
Contestants competed in both individual and team events, requiring a combination of theoretical knowledge, data processing capabilities, observation skills, and the application of astronomical knowledge in practical situations.
The IOAA was first organized in 2007 in Thailand, and Vietnam began participating in 2016.
