Vietnam ranks third in Southeast Asia for online learning

Approximately 1.8 million Vietnamese people are learning online on Coursera, a 22% increase compared to last year, primarily in data science, AI, and Chinese.

Coursera CEO Greg Hart announced this at a press conference on 9/7. The statistics are current as of the end of June this year. The Philippines leads with 2.8 million registered learners, followed by Indonesia with 2.1 million. In 4th place is Singapore (1.5 million), and in 5th place is Thailand (1.1 million). The remaining countries all have under one million learners.

The most popular courses among Vietnamese learners are basic data science, AI (artificial intelligence), project management, Chinese, and soft skills such as essay writing, communication skills, and critical thinking.

Specifically regarding AI courses, about 152,000 Vietnamese people have enrolled in over 800 courses, four times the number from last year.

"Every 4 minutes, a learner in Vietnam enrolls in a GenAI (generative AI)-related course," Hart said. This trend is consistent globally. Worldwide, there is significant interest in courses on machine learning, basic AI, programming, and data science.

Hart observed that an increasing number of Vietnamese people are embracing online learning. The average age of a Vietnamese learner is 30, significantly lower than the global average of 34. They are accessing courses from top global universities such as Stanford, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, as well as from major companies like Google, IBM, and Microsoft.

Earlier this year, Khan Academy also reported rapid growth in the number of Vietnamese online learners, reaching two million accounts. The total number of learning minutes over the past year exceeded 204 million. These figures place Vietnam second globally in terms of users, up one spot from last year, trailing only Brazil.

Coursera is currently partnering with five universities in Vietnam: National Economics University, FPT University, Van Lang University, Phenika University, and British University Vietnam. Currently, over 3,000 courses on the platform have been translated into Vietnamese. Some of these courses are eligible for university credit. For example, FPT University integrates over 80 courses into its bachelor's programs in information technology and business, with transferable credits accounting for up to approximately 20% of the degree requirements.

Founded in 2012, Coursera collaborates with over 350 universities and large companies worldwide to provide online courses. As of the end of June, Coursera has over 175 million learners, making it one of the largest online learning platforms globally.
