Vietnam returns to the top 10 at the International Mathematical Olympiad

With two gold medals, three silver, and one bronze, Vietnam ranked 9th out of 110 countries and territories participating in the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), rising more than 20 places compared to last year.

According to information from the organizers on 19/7, the two students who won gold medals are Vo Trong Khai (grade 12, Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School, Nghe An) and Tran Minh Hoang (grade 12, Ha Tinh Specialized High School). Khai scored 38/42 points, placing in the top 10 highest-scoring contestants, while Hoang scored 35 points, ranking 27th. The minimum score for a gold medal in this year's competition was 35.

The three silver medals went to Nguyen Dang Dung (grade 12, Hanoi National University of Education's High School for Gifted Students) with 34 points; Nguyen Dinh Tung (grade 11, High School for Gifted Students) with 31 points; and Le Phan Duc Man (grade 12, Le Hong Phong Specialized High School, TP HCM) with 28 points.

The only female student in the team, Truong Thanh Xuan (grade 11, Bac Ninh Specialized High School), won the bronze medal with 22 points.

2025 IMO Exam

Vietnam's total score was 188, ranking 9th among 110 participating countries and territories, following China, the US, South Korea, Japan, Poland, Israel, India, and Singapore.

Last year, Vietnam earned two silver medals, three bronze medals, and one honorable mention, finishing 33rd - the lowest in 50 years of participating in the IMO. This year's ranking is a significant improvement, rising over 20 places.

The 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad was held in Australia from 10/7 to 20/7, with the official competition days on the 15th and 16th. This year, 630 students from 110 countries and territories participated.

Each competition day, contestants had 4.5 hours to solve three math problems. The maximum score for each problem was 7, totaling 42. Contestants could receive the exam in their native language, but they had to register in advance and obtain approval from the organizers. Problem 2 in this year's exam was proposed by Tran Quang Hung, a teacher at the High School for Gifted Students.

Based on the total score of the two exam days, the organizers awarded prizes from highest to lowest. The total number of gold, silver, and bronze medals accounted for approximately 50% of the total number of participants.

The IMO has been held annually since 1959. Vietnam first joined this competition in 1974.
