General director of Vietnam Education Publishing House resigns

Nguyen Tien Thanh has stepped down as chairman of the Members' Council and general director of Vietnam Education Publishing House, effective 5/10, citing personal reasons.

Hoang Minh Son, Minister of Education and Training, issued the decision on the matter on 3/10. Thanh is responsible for fully handing over all records, documents, ongoing work, finances, assets, and related rights and obligations to Vietnam Education Publishing House, in accordance with legal regulations and internal rules.

Following his departure from the publishing house, Thanh will transfer to Van Nghe newspaper, which is affiliated with the Vietnam Writers' Association.

Nguyen Tien Thanh, 58, was appointed general director of Vietnam Education Publishing House in 4/2024. Before this role, he had nearly 30 years of experience working at various media agencies, previously serving as deputy editor-in-chief of Gia dinh va Xa hoi Newspaper and editor-in-chief of Doi song va Phap luat Magazine.

Vietnam Education Publishing House, established in 1957, operates under the Ministry of Education and Training. Its mission is to compile, edit, print, and distribute textbooks and educational publications for research, teaching, and learning across all educational levels nationwide.

This entity is the nation's largest publisher, with nearly 40 member companies. According to its website, it annually publishes thousands of educational titles and produces teaching equipment and materials.

Currently, this publisher also compiles and distributes the "Ket noi tri thuc voi cuoc song" textbook series, which is used uniformly nationwide.

The academic year 2026-2027 saw an unprecedented textbook shortage. In many provinces and cities, including Hue, Da Nang, Dak Lak, Gia Lai, An Giang, and especially TP HCM, parents rushed, queued, and "hunted" for individual books, from before to several days after the start of the academic year. According to a report from the Ministry of Education and Training, the textbook supply became sufficient only by 24/9.

During a meeting on textbook supply on 21/9, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung directed the Minister of Education and Training to review, clarify responsibilities, and strictly address organizations and individuals involved in the insufficient textbook supply. The results must be reported to the Prime Minister before 10/10.
