Vietnam secures a gold medal at the international Olympiad in informatics

Le Kien Thanh ranked 12th globally, bringing home the only gold medal for Vietnam at the 2025 International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) held in Bolivia.

The University of Technology, the training unit assigned by the Ministry of Education and Training for the Informatics Olympiad team, announced this news on 2/8.

Le Kien Thanh, a 12th-grade student from Le Quy Don Specialized High School in Gia Lai province, won the gold medal with 481.87 points. He ranked 12th out of approximately 300 contestants from 90 countries and territories.

The results were announced after two days of competition on 30/7 and 1/8. Each competition day lasted five hours with three programming problems.

The three remaining contestants from the Vietnamese team all won prizes, placing in the top 100. Dang Huy Hau, a 10th-grade student from Lam Dong, ranked 54th and won a silver medal. Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, an 11th-grade student from the Hanoi University of Science's High School for Gifted Students (HUS-HSGS), ranked 79th and also won a silver medal. Ninh Quang Thang, a 12th-grade student from Ha Long Specialized High School in Quang Ninh, received a bronze medal, ranking 89th.

According to the average Codeforces rankings (similar to Elo in chess), the Vietnamese team is in the top 12. The top teams include China, Russia, Iran, the US, Romania, South Korea, and Japan.

Last year, Vietnam's IOI team placed in the top 4 with two gold medals, one silver, and one bronze.

The International Olympiad in Informatics is for high school students and was first held in 1989 in Bulgaria. Vietnam participated in the very first year. Including this year, the Vietnamese team has won 22 gold medals, 53 silver medals, and 55 bronze medals. The team's best performance was in 1999 with three gold medals and one silver medal.

This year's IOI took place in Bolivia from 27 to 3/8. The four members of the Vietnamese team were selected from the national high school competition. In June and early July, they underwent training under the guidance of lecturers and former international Olympiad contestants from the University of Technology.
