Vietnamese students rank among top 8 at international informatics olympiad

Vietnam's delegation secured one gold, two silver medals, and one certificate of merit at the International Olympiad in Informatics, placing 8th among 92 teams.

The Ministry of Education and Training announced the results of the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) on the afternoon of 14/8.

The gold medal went to Nguyen Huu Tuan, a 12th-grade student from the High School for Gifted Students, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

Two students earned silver medals: Dang Huy Hau, an 11th-grade student from Thang Long High School for the Gifted in Lam Dong province, and Nguyen Bui Duc Dung, a 12th-grade student from the High School for Gifted Students.

Nguyen Khanh Phuc, a 12th-grade student from Luong Van Tuy High School for the Gifted in Ninh Binh, received a certificate of merit.

With these results, Vietnam ranked 8th among 92 participating delegations at this year's IOI, trailing China, South Korea, the United States, Malaysia, Japan, Poland, and Turkey. The organizing committee did not rank teams competing under the Olympic flag: Russia, Belarus, Israel, and Turkmenistan.

Last year, Vietnamese students also won one gold and two silver medals, but ranked 12th. Notably, Huy Hau and Duc Dung have consistently earned silver medals for two consecutive years.

One week prior, Huu Tuan secured a gold medal at the International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence (IOAI) for the second consecutive year. The Ministry recognized him as a student with exceptional achievements.

This year, the International Olympiad in Informatics was held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 9/8 to 16/8. A total of 375 contestants from 92 countries and territories participated in two official competition days, each featuring three problems to be solved within 5 hours. Results were immediately displayed on an electronic scoreboard via an online grading system.

According to the Ministry, this year's problems were highly challenging, primarily focusing on tasks graded by percentage based on solution quality. These types of problems allowed for multiple approaches and flexible solution development. This demanded that contestants possess comprehensive knowledge and creative abilities. In an era of advancing digital technology and artificial intelligence, countries are increasingly investing in their teams, leading to greater competition.
