According to Xiaoxiang Morning Herald, at singer Zhao Lei's concert at Beijing's Bird's Nest Stadium last weekend, a man knelt and offered a ring to his girlfriend. The woman, wearing a wedding dress, stood on tiptoes and waved to those around her.

However, some audience members behind them repeatedly shouted, "Sit down, sit down", prompting the man to gently remind the woman. Afterwards, the couple shared celebratory candies with those sitting nearby, but some refused, saying, "That's enough". Stadium security arrived and asked the crowd to stop causing a disturbance.

The incident garnered significant attention on social media, with tens of thousands of comments sparking discussion on the topic of proposals at concerts. One concertgoer wrote on Weibo: "Do whatever you want, as long as it doesn't affect others. People pay for tickets to see the singer perform, not to watch other people's private affairs". Another asked, "Honestly, do you find public proposals romantic?". A different perspective offered, "This is inherently a beautiful act; they expressed their love for only a few minutes, while the concert lasts several hours. If you happen to witness it, it's also good to congratulate those who share the same interests."

Dahe Bao newspaper suggested that the essence of the debate lies in the conflict between individual expressions of affection and the rights of those attending public performances.

"Romance is not wrong, but on the condition that it does not disturb others. A concert is a public cultural space for all attendees; no one is obligated to become a passive backdrop for a marriage proposal", the newspaper stated.

Many audience members suggested that those in love could choose an appropriate time to express their affection, such as at the beginning or end of a concert, or by purchasing tickets in a location that does not obstruct the view of other attendees.
