‘A Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side’ – solving crime through illusion

Detective writer Agatha Christie drew inspiration from the "sawing a person in half" magic trick to write her novel, 'A Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side'.

First published in 1952, the book is part of the series featuring the unassuming Miss Jane Marple. At first glance, she appears old-fashioned and slow, but beneath that exterior lies a sharp observational mind and keen analytical abilities, evident in acclaimed works such as 'The Murder at the Vicarage', 'The Body in the Library', and 'A Murder Is Announced'.

The story begins when Marple's old school friend, Ruth Van Rydock, asks her to investigate the life of her sister, Carrie Louise, at the ancient Stonygates mansion. Ruth senses that something ominous is unfolding. Having been close to the Van Rydock sisters and trusting the elder sister's intuition, Marple agrees to visit.

During her stay, Marple observes a number of unusual individuals surrounding Carrie Louise. Beyond family members and staff, the mansion's proximity to a reform school for unruly, delinquent teenagers adds a layer of intrigue to the narrative.

The reform school receives support from the Serrocold family, with Carrie Louise's third husband, Lewis, acting as a co-administrator. Unexpectedly, Christian Gulbrandson, another benefactor of the institution, arrives at the mansion unannounced, expressing strange concerns about Carrie Louise's health.

The tension escalates one evening when Lewis's private secretary unexpectedly threatens him in the study. As the extended family gathers in the hall, they hear a gunshot and suspect trouble in the room. However, events take a sudden turn: both Lewis and his secretary are unharmed, but Christian, who had been resting in the guest room, is found dead.

In a single night, Stonygates mansion experiences a murder and a threat. The paramount question becomes: why did Christian die so soon after his arrival, and who is responsible for his death?

In this work, one of Agatha Christie's most distinctive techniques is her masterful use of misdirection. With more than 10 suspicious characters, each possessing complex relationships with the homeowner, the author constructs intricate, mysterious, and unpredictable connections. Each individual has their own motives, ranging from emotional ties to financial gain, to be the killer.

This narrative device often reminds readers of two of her most celebrated works, 'And Then There Were None' and 'Murder on the Orient Express', both known for their large number of suspects. Through this, Christie crafts a layered plot, drawing readers into her intricate maze.

The fact that Lewis and Carrie Louise have had multiple marriages and numerous descendants continuously introduces new characters. Furthermore, the detail of the mansion being adjacent to a reformatory filled with unruly individuals acts as a ticking time bomb, steadily increasing the novel's roster of potential suspects.

Utilizing her keen observational skills, which could later be termed behavioral psychology, Miss Marple unravels the mystery behind the events. She ponders why not just one, but two incidents occurred simultaneously, and if there is a connection between them. This complexity reminds her of the art of magic, with its tricks and illusions designed to captivate an audience.

Beyond its ability to enthrall readers, 'A Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side' also carries social relevance. The opulent, antique Stonygates mansion serves as more than just a setting; through it, Agatha Christie offers a sharp, satirical commentary on the upper class.

Like other classical writers such as Edith Wharton, Henry James, and Jane Austen, Christie exposes the pretenses worn by the elite. Despite being descendants of wealthy, respected families, living in affluence and fame, behind their grand walls lie struggles and conspiracies.

Moreover, Christie depicts the superficial and limited concern exhibited by those running the reform school. She also sheds light on the behind-the-scenes machinations, where the institution functions as a facade concealing the illicit activities of certain individuals.

A minor drawback of the book is the relatively large number of characters within its moderate length, which occasionally creates a sense of contrivance. Additionally, the use of red herrings to mislead readers is sometimes not overly difficult to anticipate.

The New Yorker described the novel as "quick and convincing as ever". The New York Times praised it, stating: "Once again, Agatha has done a wonderful job. No one on either side of the Atlantic could do it better".

'A Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side' has been adapted, fully or partially, into various forms, from film to television. These include 'Murder Ahoy!' (1964), 'Murder with Mirrors' (1985), the 'Miss Marple' series (1991), the 'Agatha Christie's Marple' series (2010), and the 'Les Petits Meurtres d'Agatha Christie' series (2013).

Agatha Christie (1890-1976) was a renowned British writer, dubbed the "Queen of Crime Fiction", and one of the best-selling authors of all time, ranked only after the Bible and the works of William Shakespeare. Her books have sold over one billion copies in English and one billion copies in 100 other languages.

In Vietnam, the author's published works include: 'Murder on the Orient Express', 'The Murder of Roger Ackroyd', 'Death on the Nile', 'The Mysterious Affair at Styles', 'The A.B.C. Murders', 'And Then There Were None', and 'Murder in Mesopotamia'.
