AI-generated imagery replaces actress Truong Ngoc Anh in film

The film crew used AI combined with computer-generated imagery to replace all scenes featuring Truong Ngoc Anh after she faced legal troubles.

The film "Forever in Debt to a Farewell," formerly titled "The Cocoon," premiered on 8/9 in Ho Chi Minh City. This film marks actress Truong Ngoc Anh's final project before her arrest in October 2025 by the Economic Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City Police for abuse of trust to appropriate property. Anh played Lan, the mother of the main character Daniel, and also served as a co-producer.

During the premiere, producer Daniel K. Winn revealed that the film crew utilized AI technology to alter the character Lan's appearance prior to release. Director J. Robert Schulz and Hollywood experts engaged a Vietnamese-American actress to reshoot segments, then combined AI and computer-generated imagery (CGI) to create a new character, from facial features to physique. The team also used automated dialogue replacement (ADR) to dub the voice, matching the new visuals.

The production incurred an estimated 10% increase over the initial budget, requiring six months of post-production. Winn explained that cutting the character's scenes was initially considered. However, Lan's role was crucial, appearing at many significant milestones in the main character's life. The film is licensed for domestic release, premiering on 11/9, and is rated K: films for viewers under 13, requiring parental or guardian accompaniment.

At an early screening, the AI-generated imagery garnered audience attention. The character appeared for approximately 10 minutes across three segments, showing moments of inner turmoil, especially when forced to abandon her child due to turbulent circumstances. Viewers noted the AI actress's natural expressions, but observed a lack of vitality in close-up shots and occasional lip-sync discrepancies.

"Forever in Debt to a Farewell" is one of Truong Ngoc Anh's unfinished film projects. In October 2025, days before her arrest, she attended a pre-premiere event in Beverly Hills, California, United States, with the film crew. There, she reunited with cast members, including star Kieu Chinh, actor Trinh Tu Trung, and Vietnamese-American sculptor Daniel K. Winn, the inspiration for the main character.

The film opens with Daniel (played by child actor Uy Nhan) abandoned by his mother, living with his grandmother (Kieu Chinh), who sells banh cuon (steamed rice rolls). Due to circumstances, his grandmother sends him to an orphanage. He lives a solitary life until he reunites with his father (Samuel An), whom he believed had died. Later, after moving to the United States with his family, Daniel faces another major shock.

Truong Ngoc Anh, 50 years old, rose to fame in the 1990s. She began her acting career at 16 in the film "Em va Michael Jackson" and was crowned Miss New Model International 1998. She gained widespread recognition for her roles in "Gia Tu Di Vang" (1997) and "Dong Tien Xuong Mau" (1998). In the 2000s, she achieved acclaim for her role as the mother Dan in "The White Silk Dress," a war-era film by director Luu Huynh.

The use of AI to replace actors is not unprecedented in Vietnamese cinema. In August 2025, the producers of "Chot Don" used AI technology to replace all images of Miss Thuy Tien, the film's lead actress, after her arrest for investigation into customer deception. However, that film faced controversy due to the AI actress's stiff, unemotional expressions.
