Angelababy returns to red carpet after two-year 'ban'

Actress Angelababy garners attention with her return to an entertainment event's red carpet, after two years of restricted activities.

Actress Angelababy made a notable return to the red carpet on the evening of 18/12, attending an event organized by BB Art magazine. Her appearance quickly became a major talking point, with the keyword phrase "Angelababy returns to the red carpet after two years" trending on China's social media platform Weibo, according to Sohu. This marks her first significant public event in mainland China following a period of restricted activities that began in late 2023.

Her career had stalled after she attended singer Lisa's strip show at Crazy Horse, France. Many entertainment bloggers suggested Angelababy violated regulations for performing artists set by authorities, which prohibit artists from organizing, attending, or promoting sexually suggestive or obscene programs. In China, striptease is classified as an "obscene performance."

For her return, the 36-year-old star wore a Fall/Winter 2024 haute couture gown by fashion house Alexis Mabille, complemented by lightly tousled hair. Hundreds of fans waited outside to film and cheer for her, while thousands of viewers commented that the star looked good and her outfit flattered her figure.

The incident at Crazy Horse led to millions calling for a boycott of Angelababy. According to 163, this marked the biggest crisis of her career since she joined the entertainment industry in 2003. From 11/2023, she was banned from posting and commenting on Weibo for "violating laws and platform regulations." Douyin, China's largest video platform, also blocked users from following Angelababy's account. At the time, she had approximately 140 million fans across these platforms.

In early 2024, her social media accounts returned to normal. However, she remained absent from film events in mainland China, as well as television shows and advertising campaigns. Her only public appearances were at a few entertainment programs in Hong Kong.

A further sign of her potential return to active work in China is the upcoming release of the film "Tuong Tu Lenh," starring Angelababy, in 1/2025. Many viewers believe this signals her gradual re-emergence in the industry.

Angelababy, whose real name is Duong Vinh, entered the entertainment industry as a teenage model. She later ventured into acting, starring in numerous works such as "Co Phuong Bat Tu Thuong" and "Nguoi Lai Do." However, critics and audiences widely panned her acting. In 2017, Sohu listed Angelababy among actors with "beautiful faces, stiff acting." Despite her limited acting skills, she was highly sought after for commercials and served as an ambassador for many brands.

The actress was married to actor Huynh Hieu Minh, with whom she has an eight-year-old son. The couple announced their divorce in 2022.
