Chopard unveils "most complexly crafted" timepiece for 30th anniversary

Chopard introduces the L.U.C Grand Strike, the brand's most intricate watch to date, showcasing its mastery of mechanical engineering, especially in chiming watches.

The L.U.C Grand Strike is a timepiece featuring some of the most challenging sonnerie (chiming) functions in watchmaking, encased in an elegant white gold shell with clear chimes emanating from sapphire.

This product is the result of over 11,000 hours of research and development by Chopard's team of engineers and artisans. Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, co-president of Chopard, shared that this watch embodies 30 years of accumulated experience. He describes its chime as "the rhythm of high watchmaking artistry".

The L.U.C Grand Strike's most distinctive feature is its acoustic signature. The watch is equipped with three different chiming modes: Grande Sonnerie, Petite Sonnerie, and Minute Repeater. This classification is common in chiming watches.

Traditionally, gongs (the sound-producing part) in chiming watches are made of steel. However, Chopard boldly chose a different path: using gongs made of solid sapphire crystal.

In 2016, Chopard garnered acclaim with its L.U.C Full Strike model, which also used sapphire gongs. This technology is now elevated in the Grand Strike. The difference lies in its monobloc construction. Instead of steel gongs screwed into the case (which can dissipate sound as it travels through connections), Chopard crafted the gongs and the watch glass as a single, seamless sapphire block.

When the hammers strike the sapphire gongs, the sound transmits directly through the crystal and disperses into the air without encountering any obstacles or joints. This results in a clearer, purer, and louder chime compared to metal gongs. Chopard refers to this as "the sound of eternity". The notes are tuned to C-sharp and F-sharp chords, providing a pleasant and stable auditory experience.

Chopard's sapphire gongs have a square shape instead of the traditional round form of steel gongs. This design allows for better hammer contact and more efficient sound wave direction, creating a long and resonant chime. Since sapphire is second only to diamond in hardness, these gongs will not deform or wear over time, ensuring the chimes remain as clear as on the first day.

The metallic orchestra's heart consists of 686 components. When activated, 34 parts move synchronously in just 0.03 seconds for the hammers to strike the gongs, producing sound. Photo: Chopard

The watch also boasts a comfortable size, with a 43 mm diameter and a thickness of just over 14 mm. This is a masterpiece of spatial engineering, allowing the timepiece to be worn comfortably on the wrist daily, not merely for display or acoustic appreciation like many other complex high-end chiming watches on the market.

Aesthetically, the L.U.C Grand Strike adopts a bold approach by omitting a dial, fully revealing the intricate movement within. Wearers can admire all mechanical details, from the hammers and gears to the rotating Tourbillon cage at the 6 o'clock position. The tourbillon bridge, made of mirror-polished stainless steel, creates a strong visual accent amidst the German silver components. The stable operation of this intricate assembly is key to the watch achieving both rigorous certifications: COSC and Poinçon de Geneve.

The product holds 10 exclusive patents, with five developed entirely anew for this model. Photo: Chopard

Prominently positioned at 6 o'clock is the 60-second tourbillon, acting as the heart ensuring precision for the L.U.C Grand Strike. Built upon the expertise of the L.U.C 02 movement series, this rotating cage not only neutralizes the effects of gravity on the movement but also cleverly integrates a small seconds hand. The movement bridges and mainplate are crafted from German silver, a traditional material favored by collectors for its warm hue and unique patina that develops over years of use. In Vietnam, the Chopard brand is officially distributed by Tam Son International Company.
