Donnie Yen: My wife helps me navigate difficult moods

Chinese actor Donnie Yen reveals he is prone to stress but is fortunate to have an optimistic, cheerful wife by his side.

Actor Donnie Yen, 63, discussed his partner and 2026 work plans with On on 20/2. He shared that he often experiences stress and melancholy, while his wife, Cissy Wang, has an opposite, cheerful disposition. For many years, she has helped him balance his emotions. Thanks to Cissy Wang's guidance, Donnie Yen has gradually learned to control his moods better, often wondering "why she is so happy and full of positive energy."

For Donnie Yen, the meaning of life lies in finding genuine joy, and as he ages, he cherishes these feelings even more.

The actor is currently preparing to direct and star in a John Wick spin-off, with filming expected to begin in Europe in April. He feels pressure due to the extensive workload, as this marks his first time participating in all stages of a Hollywood-produced English-language project. Donnie Yen's aspiration is to challenge himself and create a new work that appeals to audiences in both the East and the West.

Some friends have advised Donnie Yen to lower his expectations for himself, but he believes that if he stops working and striving, his life would lose much of its meaning. He enjoys the feeling of overcoming challenges. The actor stated, "Life is fragile; if I have an opportunity to do something, I will dedicate myself fully to it and find joy in that commitment."

Over 40 years in filmmaking, the actor has achieved success with films such as Hero, SPL: Sha Po Lang, Ip Man, 14 Blades, and xXx: Return of Xander Cage. According to Ifeng, Donnie Yen's notable achievement is his ability to integrate diverse martial arts disciplines into cinema, a skill honed through his formal training. His introduction to martial arts came from his mother, Mai Bao Thien, a Tai Chi master. From a young age, Donnie Yen was guided by his mother in traditional Chinese martial arts. At 11, he moved with his family to the United States, where he formally studied Judo, Boxing, and MMA.

In his 60s, Donnie Yen maintains a weight of approximately 65 kg, meticulously controlling his food, drinks, and calorie intake at each meal. He divides his food into smaller portions instead of eating large meals at once, emphasizing both physical training, muscle building, and skincare. Donnie Yen regularly uses restorative face masks to slow the aging process.
