Born in San Francisco, US, in 1972, Dane served in the Navy before becoming an architect and interior designer. He began acting serendipitously, taking on the role of Joe Keller in "All My Sons". He later made guest appearances in television series such as "Saved by the Bell", "The Wonder Years", "Roseanne", and "Married... with Children". His film debut was "The Basket" in 2000.

In 2006, Dane joined the second season of "Grey's Anatomy" as Mark Sloan. Audience reception elevated the role to a main character. Mark, a charming figure, had storylines centered on workplace relationships. This role established Dane as a sex symbol. He expressed his affection for the character but stated his desire to avoid being typecast in charming roles throughout his career. Dane exited the series in 2012 when Mark's character died. His other notable works include "Burlesque", "Valentine's Day", "Marley & Me", and "The Last Ship".

From 2014 to 2018, Dane starred as Tom Chandler in "The Last Ship". He grew dissatisfied with the role, finding the character too similar to Mark Sloan, a role that had defined his career. Seeking a different challenge, he took on the part of Cal Jacobs in "Euphoria". Cal was a seemingly exemplary man who engaged in anonymous online sexual encounters.

Dane found the character offered a new experience. "I had to portray every detail because Cal lives a fragile life," he told Men's Health. "He is always teetering between what is morally right and what is legal. I had to convey all emotional nuances. I hope this character shows a unique human aspect."
