According to the BBC, Cate Blanchett expressed excitement about taking on the new role, viewing it as an opportunity to engage in dialogue with future thinkers, artists, and creative practitioners. During her tenure as visiting professor, she will deliver lectures and participate in various academic activities with students and the wider University of Oxford community.

The visiting professorship in contemporary theater at St Catherine's College was established by Cameron Mackintosh in 1990. Prior to Blanchett, renowned British artists like actor Ian McKellen, Dame Meera Syal, and Dame Diana Rigg held this position. Mackintosh told the BBC that Blanchett's extensive career could inspire students.
Cate Blanchett, 57, was born in Australia. Over three decades, she has established herself as a leading actress of her generation. Blanchett gained global recognition for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth (1998) and has since appeared in works like The Lord of the Rings, Ocean's 8, Carol, Notes on a Scandal, and Tar.

St Catherine's College, a constituent college of the University of Oxford, was established in 1962. It originated from St Catherine's Society, a precursor organization that provided opportunities for academically capable but financially disadvantaged students to attend Oxford. As of 11/2024, the college enrolls 494 undergraduate and 337 postgraduate students, placing it among the largest colleges at Oxford and Cambridge.
