Lai Mai Hoa: "my numerous shows are not due to luck"

Gen Z model Lai Mai Hoa says her continuous appearances on major runways are not from luck but the result of training and discipline.

The model secured seven out of 15 slots at Vietnam International Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2026. After winning Vietnam's Next Top Model 2025, Lai Mai Hoa caught the eye of many designers, often being given key positions in shows. On this occasion, she spoke about her changing life and growth at age 21.

"What do you think helps you maintain your appeal to be continuously chosen by designers and brands?"

"For me, diligence is very important. I do not shy away from participating in large or small shows, or from any position on the runway. I always see every work opportunity as a way to learn and gain experience.

Over the past eight months, I have performed for several well-known domestic fashion houses, including Do Manh Cuong, Do Long, Chung Thanh Phong, Adrian Anh Tuan, Vu Ngoc and Son, and Vu Viet Ha. Additionally, I participated in several magazine photoshoots and worked with many major brands. I also accompanied students from art schools in their graduation shows or project photoshohoots. When I start working, I give my all, transmitting positive energy to the team and colleagues.

I am happy that the title has brought me closer to the audience, opening many career opportunities. Each experience helps me improve myself and become more confident in pursuing my dreams. Regarding changes, I believe I have made efforts to build a clean image in the public eye. I have never rested on my laurels or become arrogant about my achievements. The journey so far has not been long, but it has provided me with lessons and life experiences in my twenties."

"How has initial success in your career changed your life?"

"I have become more independent in both thought and action. In my work, I know what I need to prepare, such as making detailed plans and preparing for unfavorable situations. Previously, before pursuing a professional modeling career, I was still clumsy and needed support. Now, I am proactive in all stages and take responsibility for every decision I make.

As designers and brands became more familiar with the name Lai Mai Hoa, I secured more shows and commercial contracts, leading to a more stable income. I self-fund a portion of my tuition and personal expenses. Earning money through my own labor has made me understand and appreciate my parents even more.

My student life is currently simple, like that of many peers; I do not have many spending needs or luxuries. I save to invest in my career, learn new skills, and prepare a financial foundation for future plans."

Lai Mai Hoa performs in diverse styles. She is 1,84 m tall, with measurements of 83-65-96 cm.

"What does your family say about your growth?"

"My parents always support me on my path to becoming a versatile model. Seeing me grow more confident, generate my own income, and begin to manage my own life, the whole family is happy.

My schedule can sometimes be packed, and I get tired, but I rarely complain to my parents. Whenever I call, I usually share happy stories to reassure them. However, my parents understand their children well; just by hearing my voice or a few short sentences, they know if I am under pressure.

I am the youngest of three sisters. Although there is a significant age gap and we do not live close to each other, I have learned from my sisters about life perspectives and proper conduct with those around me. I am grateful to have grown up in a family that values knowledge. My parents work in an office but always have open, modern views. My father taught me that to go far in any field, one needs a solid foundation of knowledge. Therefore, I have never neglected or underestimated my studies at university.

I always remember my father's strictness to prevent myself from falling astray or being tempted by superficial things. His saying, "your heart is the most important thing," is currently my guiding principle in my profession."

"How has your perspective on showbiz changed compared to before you became famous?"

"Before entering the profession, I viewed showbiz mainly through what I read or watched in the media, so sometimes it felt quite unfamiliar. When I participated in Vietnam's Next Top Model 2025, I approached it with a mindset of giving my all, ready to embrace new things instead of being afraid or hesitant. I really like the saying: "It's not hard, it's just new" and I always remind myself of that whenever I face a new challenge.

I see showbiz as any other field, always presenting both opportunities and challenges. The important thing is to maintain professionalism, an eager-to-learn attitude, and proper conduct. Recently, I have been fortunate to work with many seniors, learning professionalism in skills, demeanor, and attitude. Instead of worrying or hesitating, I move forward with curiosity, a progressive spirit, and a desire to improve myself every day. I choose a slow but steady path, focusing on doing my job well rather than being concerned with external factors."

"How do you balance your studies and pursuing your passion?"

"I am currently a final year student in Development Economics at the University of Economics, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. According to the plan, I have one internship semester and a thesis before graduating next year. My goal is to complete the program and receive my degree on time.

My modeling work requires me to travel quite a bit between cities. Therefore, I always proactively inform my manager about my academic schedule so they can arrange suitable performance and event schedules, minimizing overlaps. This past June, I had to both take my final module exams and participate in the 21st Vietnam International Fashion Week. I took advantage of every free moment, such as early mornings or while on a plane, to review my lessons.

Thanks to sticking to my set schedule, I have not encountered any problems. This experience has also helped me develop discipline, learn how to manage my time, and prioritize tasks so as not to miss any opportunities."
