Lionel Messi juggles in Shakira's music video

Football superstar Lionel Messi appears alongside Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland in the "Dai Dai" music video, the official song for the 2026 World Cup.

The four-minute music video opens with football stars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Erling Haaland stepping onto a field, collectively stating, "Shakira, we are ready." Later in the video, Messi is seen juggling a ball and smiling as Shakira calls his name. The MV also includes archival footage of football legends such as Diego Maradona, Paolo Maldini, Romario, Cristiano Ronaldo, and David Beckham.

Filmed in Miami and directed by Hannah Lux Davis, the video features Shakira alongside images of Mexico's Angel of Independence monument, one of the three host nations for this year's World Cup. She then dances in a desert setting with African children, a baobab tree in the background. Following this, she enters a football stadium with dancers dressed in the national colors of participating countries.

"Dai Dai" marks the second time Shakira has performed the official FIFA World Cup song, following her 2010 hit "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)". Billboard praised the track for its celebration of sportsmanship and its inspiring message for both players and fans. The catchy melody blends dance-pop, Afrobeats (modern African pop music), and reggaeton (Latin American dance music).

Shakira is known as the "queen of World Cup music" due to her contributions, including "Hips Don't Lie (Bamboo)" and "Waka Waka". "Waka Waka" holds the record as the best-selling World Cup single in history, with over 10 million copies sold and currently boasts 4.5 billion views on YouTube.

In 2006, "Hips Don't Lie" was considered one of the best and most iconic World Cup songs, despite not being the official track for the tournament in Germany. According to Billboard, the song topped charts in 55 countries and is among the best-selling singles of the 21st century. The "Bamboo" version of the song was remixed with a stronger drum beat for its performance before the final match in Berlin.

Shakira, 49 years old, is a renowned Colombian singer. Throughout her career, she has received numerous music awards and set multiple Guinness World Records. Following her separation from footballer Gerard Pique, she was rumored to be dating F1 racer Lewis Hamilton. In April 2024, media outlets reported her dating English actor Lucien Laviscount after they collaborated on the "Punteria" music video.

The 2026 World Cup is set to begin on June 11 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City and conclude on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which will be rebranded as New York New Jersey Stadium during the tournament. Shakira is scheduled to perform during the final's halftime show alongside Madonna and BTS.
