On her personal page, the singer expressed her desire to compose for characters from a film series she has loved since childhood. Swift revealed she had the opportunity to watch an early cut of Toy Story 5 and was captivated by the story, composing the song upon returning home after the screening.
According to Variety, director Andrew Stanton praised the musical piece. He noted that Swift deeply understood the character's emotions, creating a song that harmonizes with the world of Toy Story. "From the first listen, we felt this song belonged to the movie. Everything seemed destined," he said.

Unlike previous installments that focused on the friendship between Buzz and Woody, this film places Jessie at its center. The character returns to her old home where she once lived with a young girl named Emily, but finds everything changed as her former owner is no longer there. The film explores Jessie's memories, feelings of loss, and the pain of abandonment. Additionally, the script depicts the evolving ways children play as technology becomes more prevalent, presenting traditional toys with new challenges. This time, the group confronts Lilypad, a frog-shaped tablet.
In the second installment, Jessie's story deeply moved audiences through the song "When She Loved Me", performed by Sarah McLachlan, which earned songwriter Randy Newman an Oscar nomination. Many fans anticipate "I Knew It, I Knew You" will similarly become a musical highlight of the film series.
