Toc Tien: 'I love life more than ever'

At 37, Toc Tien says she isn't focused on romance after her divorce, concentrating on music instead, but would be open to love if the opportunity arises.

Singer Toc Tien spoke for the first time about her single life after separating from music producer Touliver, coinciding with the release of her new music video, "Nguoi con thuong em khong?" on 5/6.

Explaining the inspiration behind "Nguoi con thuong em khong?", Toc Tien revealed the song has been three years in the making. She and songwriter Huynh Van debated the title, ultimately choosing the poignant final lyric: "Do you still love me, why do I still cling to longing day and night?" Through the music video, she aims to convey a universal message: everyone desires to love and be loved. The lyrics reflect the emotional journey of a woman in love, resonating with anyone who has experienced similar feelings. Personally, she is dedicating all her energy to making music and developing new projects, with no current thoughts of romance.

When asked about the possibility of new love, Toc Tien recalled a famous lyric by My Tam: "When love comes, I expect nothing; when love leaves, I have no regrets." She views a new relationship as a "gift" if it is meant to be. For now, her life revolves around her cats, making music, recording, and spending time with close female friends. She feels more vibrant and energetic than ever, fully focused on her music and singing. She often jokes with her team that she has "nothing left but her career."

Reflecting on her personal evolution, Toc Tien noted a significant shift. "Compared to before, I am much softer, gentler, and more feminine," she said. "In the past, I was edgy and always wanted to prove myself. Now, I simply want to immerse myself, enjoy life, and express my authentic self." This transformation, she clarified, isn't a consequence of emotional upheaval but a natural progression. "At each stage of life, I want to explore a different version of myself in the most natural way possible," she added.

Addressing how she maintains her sensual image and youthful style, Toc Tien admitted, "I do have moments when I look weak and lifeless, but fewer people see those times." She emphasized that she never forces herself to be beautiful or strong constantly. "When I'm tired or feel less attractive, I let things be and allow myself to relax a bit. After that phase, I recharge by going out with friends and engaging in self-care. I've learned to love myself."

Discussing her active participation in the music show "Chi dep dap gio 2024" (Sisters Who Make Waves 2024), Toc Tien highlighted the biggest takeaway: professional relationships. "Before, I was reluctant to socialize and make friends," she confessed. "After the show, I gained many close female friends and realized everyone is always ready to support and protect me." She also cherished the affection from her audience, including loyal fans. Professionally, she developed new skills in staging and performance, learning to gauge audience emotions more accurately.

Regarding future musical endeavors, Toc Tien expressed a desire to try new things, but only if they are suitable. "I always like to experience new things, but they must be fitting; I won't chase trends at any cost," she stated. "With any experiment, I carefully consider it to ensure it aligns with my style, voice, image, and personality. In fact, I've sung almost every genre before. Going forward, instead of just commissioning songs from songwriters, I want to convey more of my personal stories and experiences through music." She is currently nurturing a single. However, known for her meticulous and deliberate approach, she prefers to "roll it out gradually," only introducing the product to the public when it is 99% complete.

Toc Tien began her artistic journey at the Children's House of TP HCM at four years old, turning professional at 13. At the peak of her early career, she moved to the United States to study. She returned to Vietnam in 2014, quickly achieving success with hit songs like "Ngay mai" (composed by Luu Thien Huong) and "Co ai thuong em nhu anh" (by Bui Cong Nam). In 2017, she received the Best Asian Artist award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA). Toc Tien also ventured into acting, appearing in films such as "Gia gan, My nhan va Gang to" and "Thanh Soi."

With over 20 years in the entertainment industry, the singer maintains her appeal with a sensual image and youthful music style. She recently won "Chi dep dap gio 2024," securing three trophies. Earlier this year, Toc Tien announced the end of her 10-year marriage with music producer Hoang Touliver.
