Tom Cruise sends message of unity at World Cup closing ceremony

Actor Tom Cruise called football a "wordless language" during his speech to fans at the World Cup 2026 closing ceremony.

Actor Tom Cruise delivered a powerful message of unity at the World Cup 2026 closing ceremony, held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on the evening of 19/7. Addressing fans, Cruise emphasized football's ability to transcend boundaries, stating, "Thirty days ago, nations began a journey. They crossed oceans, traversed borders, stepped beyond cultural differences. They collectively showed us why this sport belongs to the world." He described football as "a language without words" that "connects people" and "transforms strangers into friends," adding, "We witnessed greatness, shared moments of joy, of hope—moments we will never forget."

Concluding his address, the actor declared, "These stories now belong to all of us—every nation, every player, every fan, every volunteer, every dream cherished on the field. As we enter the final chapter, let us celebrate the tournament that brought the entire world closer. Let us honor each other. This is football. This is unity, and this is greatness."

Before the event, organizers had announced Cruise would make a special appearance, though details were not disclosed. Many fans speculated the actor would perform a stunt, similar to his 46-meter jump at the Olympic closing ceremony in France in 2024. The closing ceremony, lasting about one hour, featured performances by a lineup of stars including: streamer IShowSpeed, rappers Post Malone and Robbie Williams, Nicole Scherzinger, and Laura Pausini. Tom Holland also made an appearance, delivering a monologue.

This year's World Cup commenced vibrantly with three grand opening ceremonies across the three co-hosting nations: the US, Mexico, and Canada. Renowned artists like Katy Perry and Lisa (Blackpink), alongside other stars, ignited the inaugural events. Spain and Argentina competed in the final match.

Tom Cruise, 64 years old, has been dubbed "the last movie star" by Hollywood Reporter. He is well-known for performing his own stunts, eschewing the use of body doubles. His box office appeal has remained consistent for four decades, from the film Risky Business (1983) to Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning (2025), with each project grossing hundreds of millions of USD. Cruise is considered an icon of American cinema and culture.
