‘Wednesday 2’ ends abruptly

The second season of "Wednesday" concludes with numerous unanswered questions, leaving the fate of many characters uncertain.

The final four episodes, released on Netflix on 3/9, begin with Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) awakening from a coma. She sets out to uncover the truth behind a sinister experiment that extracts psychic abilities from outcasts to transfer them to ordinary people. During her investigation, secrets of Nevermore Academy are revealed, threatening the Addams family.

The filmmakers construct twists and turns that push Jenna Ortega's character into difficult situations, where the line between life and death is blurred, and family becomes her source of strength. According to IndieWire, instead of developing the plot further, the series repeats motifs from the first season. The team prolongs Tyler's (Hunter Doohan) role as the antagonist, as well as the storylines of the Galpin and Addams families.

The motivations of new characters like Isaac and Francoise are poorly explored and unconvincing. Wednesday's decision to save Tyler once again does not lead to any meaningful dialogue or transformation for either of them.

Critics consider the body swap between Wednesday and Enid one of the few innovative plot points. This idea opens up many avenues for exploration, such as exposing the psychological complexities of each character, while challenging Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers to alter their acting styles. However, this detail only lasts for one episode before returning to the familiar formula: Wednesday investigates, confronts the villain, and concludes with action sequences.

Lady Gaga's appearance as Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary Nevermore Academy professor, fails to make a lasting impression. Her character primarily serves to temporarily restore Wednesday's psychic abilities to maintain the narrative flow. Additionally, the repeated warnings about Wednesday's arrogance do not lead to any specific consequences or lessons.

In this season, the tension between Wednesday and her mother manifests as an internal conflict. Morticia, a powerful mother, acts as Wednesday's protector against various mysteries. Conversely, Wednesday is independent and seeks the truth but faces pressure from her family. Their dialogues highlight the psychological depth of both characters, paving the way for development and reconciliation in future seasons.

Enid's character exhibits new facets in both appearance and personality. She grapples with romantic relationships and shows vulnerability when her friendship with Wednesday experiences turmoil. Enid becomes a pivotal character, especially after the revelation that she is an Alpha werewolf.

Jenna Ortega shines as the titular character, portraying a stoic young woman. The actress conveys the character's inner thoughts through her eyes and gestures, particularly in scenes involving family conflicts.

Catherine Zeta-Jones creates a captivating portrayal of a mysterious mother, adding depth to the mother-daughter relationship. Emma Myers and Isaac Ordonez have less screen time but still leave a mark with scenes showcasing their bravery and loyalty to their families.

Elle magazine notes that the ending reflects the conflicts within the Addams family but leaves many questions unanswered, such as the fates of Enid and Aunt Ophelia. Cosmopolitan suggests that season two concludes with major cliffhangers while also revealing how the powers at Nevermore operate. The third season is expected to focus on Wednesday's journey north to find her best friend and help Enid return to normal, encountering new threats along the way.
